"From Folklore to Film: The Story Behind 'Stree'

In the bustling landscape of Indian cinema, where genres frequently blend and narratives defy conventional boundaries, the 2018 film "Stree" stands out as a remarkable fusion of horror and comedy. Directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Dinesh Vijan, the film not only captivated audiences with its unique storyline but also brought attention to the rich cultural folklore of India. This blog delves into the origins of "Stree," exploring its cultural roots, production journey, and the reasons behind its immense success.

We all have come across and have our own list of horror films that we know are based on some real stories across the world. Especially in country of India i.e Bharat recently the movie STREE is also something like that.

"Stree," which translates to "woman" in Hindi, draws inspiration from Indian folklore, particularly from the ghost stories that have been passed down through generations.

Released in 2018, a Rajkummar Rao - Shraddha Kapoor starrer, directed by Amar Kaushik is based on the real urban legend which had its presence in the 90s. Yes not so old right? In the nineties, within the areas enveloping the Bengaluru - the silicon valley of India i.e. Bharat. People living in the 90s decade would be familiar with the term Nale Ba which translates to Kal Aaana in Hindi or Come Tomorrow in English. This line also co-incides with the line mentioned in the film being written on the walls of the house to prevent the ghost from attacking them.

It is said that this witch / ghost would prey / target men by knocking on the doors of the houses at night. Any man who opened the door at night by hearing the knock would be found dead the next day. It is said that this spirit would call using the voice of the loved ones which would make the men to go and open the door. The only way to make the spirit / ghost go away would be to say Nale Ba from inside the house upon hearing which the ghost would go away and wait for the next day. And thus this cycle would repeat continuously.

Don't be surprised if you find Nale Ba written on the walls of some old houses in Bengaluru. Yes, they are still present today. The film is however set up in state of Madhya Pradesh and has a tad different  plot case but even the director Amar Kaushik has acknowledged that this plot is based on the happenings from the city of Bengaluru, Karnataka.

This film was first of the cinematic horror universe which the director is aspiring to create.

The sequel to this film Stree 2 has a multi starred cast with likes AparShakti Khuranna, Varun Dhawan in addition the existing cast. And who can forget the brilliance of Pankaj Tripathi in the first film where he acts as an courtesan and the brilliance continues in the sequel as well. Varun Dhawan's introduction into this film makes the connection from the film Bhediya another of Amar Kaushik's creation. Thus the creation of the cinematic horror universe.

Now coming back the story, how true the true story is I guess we would never know but never the less we can still enjoy the experience of the film and the plot.

Until next time, keep thinking about whether there are any possible real stories behind other recently released movies!
