But here's a question that tends to slip past us: would you ever get thirsty if you were surrounded by water all the time? It sounds like the setup to a joke, but it's exactly the puzzle that comes up when we ask whether fish — or aquatic animals in general — get thirsty, and if so, whether they actually drink the water around them.

First, why do we get thirsty at all?

Water helps our bodies run smoothly. It supports digestion, helps process waste, and keeps everything working as it should. But we lose water constantly — through perspiration, urine, and plenty of other everyday processes. To make up for what's lost, the brain sends out a kind of "water required" signal, and that's what we feel as thirst.

That raises another point worth understanding: having too much water or too little water can both be dangerous. The reason comes down to a process called osmosis.

A quick look at osmosis

Osmosis is basically the flow of molecules — in this case, water — from an area with a higher water concentration to an area with a lower one. You've probably seen it happen without realizing it. Soak dry raisins in water overnight, and by morning they're all swollen. Dip your hands in water for a while, and they look a little puffed up. Those are simple, everyday examples of osmosis at work.

With the raisins, here's what happened: inside the raisin cells there were other molecules mixed in with the water, so the water concentration inside was lower than the water concentration outside in the glass. To balance things out, osmosis pulled water from the glass into the raisin cells. The same idea applies to fish.

So do fish actually drink water?

Fish do take in water, but how they handle it depends a lot on whether they live in fresh water or salt water.

Freshwater fish have less salt and more fresh water inside their bodies. They do take in water, but they also release large amounts of it to keep the balance right — a process called osmoregulation. Saltwater fish, which live in water that's much saltier than they are, do the opposite: they take in a lot of water and let very little out.

You can even see this reflected in their waste. For freshwater fish, the output is mostly dilute water. For saltwater fish, it's a much more concentrated output. Two very different strategies, both solving the same problem.

But is that really "drinking"?

You might argue that this doesn't really mean fish are "drinking" the way we do — that they're just keeping themselves adjusted to their environment. And in a way, that's true. But isn't that exactly what we humans are doing when we take a sip of water? Our bodies, like theirs, are always working to keep the balance right so that our cells don't end up with too much water or too little. The environment changes, but the goal stays the same.
