Why can't we see air? It might seem like a silly question at first — the kind of thing you'd never think to ask. But back when someone first asked why an apple fell to the ground, that seemed silly too. (Whether it was actually an apple or something else, we won't debate here.) There's a real reason behind everything, and there's a real reason the air around us stays invisible to the naked eye.
First, why do we see anything at all?
To answer the air question, we need to understand how seeing works. We can see a green tree, a blue sky, a red car, or a black cat because of how light behaves. The short version is three words: reflection of light. For the longer version, keep reading.

How reflection works
When light falls on an object, the object absorbs some of it and reflects the rest. Take a red rose: light hits the rose, absorbs most of the wavelengths, and reflects the red one back to your eyes. To be precise, objects absorb and reflect certain wavelengths of light.
But a human eye can only see a certain range of wavelengths — what we call the visible range. There are plenty of other ranges, like infrared and ultraviolet, that sit outside of it.
So why can't we see air?
The answer lies in what air is made of. Air is made up of gas molecules that are so small and so far apart that they don't reflect light back to our eyes in a way we can pick up. Even if the molecules did reflect some light, it would likely fall outside the human visible range. The molecules are so scattered that light simply passes straight through them.
That said, some gases are visible to the naked eye. Iodine, for example, gives off a violet colour, while chlorine has a greenish-yellow tint to it.
When air condenses, it turns into water droplets, which reflect light much better — and that's part of why we can see rain and rainbows. In normal circumstances, though, the composition of air keeps it invisible. But when there's heavy rain or a lot of dust in the air, we start to get a slight sense of it, as those larger particles catch and scatter the light just enough for us to notice.
Maybe it's for the best
Just imagine how hazy our vision would be if we could actually see air. Every breath we took, every breeze that passed, would clutter our view and make it far harder to make out the world around us. As humans, we've evolved to survive, and it's quite possible that not seeing air is exactly what serves our best interests. Our eyes that can't pick up scattered gases aren't a flaw — they're a feature that keeps our view clear.
